Food is a Basic Human Right: remains one of NourishKC’s primary core values. The need for healthy and fresh food is more prominent than ever, but accessing food safely is also critical for everyone. NourishKC has decades of experience creating balanced meals from rescued food while maintaining all additional COVID-19 health standards and sharing resources with partnering agencies.
Food insecurity has no regard for other challenges, even a pandemic. Without the Kansas City Community Kitchen (KCCK), the 500 guests we serve every weekday would struggle to eat. KCCK remained open to the public during the citywide shutdown; however, it was critical we adapt our meal service to ensure guest, volunteer, and staff safety. These changes have resulted in considerable increases in expenses, and our cost per meal has risen from 12 to 80 cents. Additional costs for to-go supplies, cleaning supplies, protective wear, additional trash pick-ups, building security, and innovative fundraising approaches, all had to be researched and implemented. During 2020, we provided over 105,000 meals to individuals without asking for any personal information.
