Child Nutrition Reauthorization Plan Calls for Expanding Free Meal Access, K-12 Dive, July 21, 2022
Last Wednesday, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) introduced the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act, a long-anticipated child nutrition reauthorization bill that seeks to expand the Community Eligibility Provision and increase the federal reimbursement rate for school lunch. The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) praised the bill, calling it a “comprehensive” plan to “increase access to school meals, summer meals, and child care meals like never before.” In a statement, FRAC President Luis Guardia said, “The bill builds upon the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has continued to highlight the importance of the federal child nutrition programs as families recover from the ongoing health and economic fallout of the pandemic.”
